Modern Foreign Languages begin immediately in the Pre-Prep at Maldon Court.
French is introduced here and continued into Reception and Key Stage1. The language is learned through songs, games and ICT software. The computer suite is used as a language lab once a week and pupils learn through their listening skills and repetition.
By the time pupils reach Key Stage 2, they have a good basic grounding in French. Pupils from Form 3 are ready to learn a second language and Spanish is introduced.
We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our MFL lessons. Our principal aim is to develop children's knowledge, skills and understanding. Children have the opportunity to support their work with a variety of resources. We aim for a balance of whole class, group and independent learning. Wherever possible we encourage children to use and apply their learning in other areas of the curriculum; ICT, PE and Music, for example, are particularly appropriate for cross-curricular teaching.
Our aims for MFL are for children to:
-
foster an interest in learing another language;
-
become aware that language has a structure, and that this structure differs from one language to another;
-
develop speaking and listening skills.
-
gain enjoyment, pride and a sense of achievement;
-
explore and apply strategies to improve their learning;
-
explore their own cultural identities and those of others.
