LITERACY WEEK
English, as always, is a very important part of the curriculum here at Maldon Court. Basic skills are taught from Pre Prep and reinforced throughout the years. Grammar, punctuation, comprehension, reading, writing and handwriting are taught as our basic curriculum and children leave the school with an extremely high level of literacy skills. Children enhance their knowledge and understanding of English through a wide range of stimulating teaching
Extreme Literacy Week
For the first time Maldon Court ran a whole week of work linked to Literacy. Each day of the week was themed. Staff went on storytelling courses in the lead up to the week and came back brimming with ideas so that on the Monday morning, storytelling was introduced by Mrs. Tomkins in a whole school assembly. The children were asked to bring characters and objects and some of these were chosen to be in a completely unrehearsed story. These ideas were taken by the children into their own story writing. Each class in KS1 had the opportunity to join with a class in KS2. The children were then paired up to write a story and then illustrate it. There was much excitement as children found out who their partners were. The school was like a hive of busy bees. By the end of the day we had a fantastic selection of stories. These have been bound and are in the library.

On Tuesday there were two planned activities. Two authors were invited into the school, Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler. Together they have written a series of books about a Tudor Detective called Sarah Jane, The Gargoylz and Dinosaurs. The children attended workshops including The Old Woman in the Shoe and creating ‘Wanted' posters in Tudor style. The second activity was Creative Writing. The children had to write their own story ending for The Grizzly Bear's Adventure . Some of these stories have been entered into a national competition.
Wednesday was another great success. Every class went out of school to look for inspiration for Thrilling words Thursday. Visits included the Prom, Leeches Garden, St Giles' Church, and the Hythe. The children were all very enthusiastic and came back to school with words buzzing around in their heads.
Thrilling Thursday dawned .The children spent the day thinking of words to describe the places they had been to visit. Exciting adjectives, metaphors, similes were all found and were written by the children onto canvasses which are now displayed in the library.
The Highlight of the week was Dress up Friday. The children all came to school dressed as a character from a book. We had an assembly where work from each class was celebrated. A very busy week but one everyone enjoyed.
