History

At Maldon Court Preparatory School, History is introduced to our children in the Foundation Stage as part of the Knowledge and Understanding of the World curriculum. It is then continued throughout the rest of the school both as a discreet subject and as part of our Summer Term cross curricular theme which next year will be ‘Around the world' in preparation for the 2012 Olympics being held in London.

Following our ISI inspection it was noted that History is taught ‘As a cross curricular theme for one term each year, this brings together educational experiences across a large number of different subjects and consolidates subject skills.

'The objective of the History curriculum is to allow our children to develop an awareness of the past; the ways in which it differs from the present and what impact History has had in our present day lives.

In Key Stage 1 the subject is taught through a variety of topics, often using historical artefacts and stories of famous people and events such as Remembrance Sunday, as starting points.

Ancient, Modern and Local History are addressed in Key Stage 2 including units of history based on Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, The Romans, Invaders and Settlers and Victorians.

The children will acquire precise historical skills based on the key questions of "how do we know?", "what happened?", and "why?" This gives them the opportunities to examine historical evidence and form their own impressions and conclusions from the questions that they ask.

School trips further enhance children's understanding of a period in time, in learning about features of that period but also about the impact people and places have on our lives today. Pupils in Form 4 are furthering their knowledge of the Roman period by visiting Colchester Castle - the stage for Boudicca's revolt - a great source of local history.
