Educational Visits

Pre-Prep & Reception Trip to Springstep Farm: Tuesday, 22nd September 2009

Pre Prep and Reception class had a fantastic time when they visited Springstep Goat farm on Tuesday morning. The 800 goats were really pleased to see them and the children were exceptionally good as they had been asked not to touch the animals on this occasion. Back at school the children enjoyed tasting the products made from goat’s milk and comparing them to products made from cow’s milk.

Form 3 & 4 Trip to Sandford Mill: Tuesday, 22nd September

Form 3 and 4 went to Sandford Mill.  They had a fantastic time learning about friction, how is caused and how it can be reduced.  They made aeroplanes, measured forces and experimented with different machinery.  In the afternoon they were taken on a river trail where they made their own river, observing how it flowed whilst depositing mud and grit.  They played ‘pooh sticks’ in the River Chelmer to see how the water flowed at different speeds and in different directions.  They were also lucky enough to see a canal barge use the locks, something many of the children had never seen before.

KS1 Trip – Thorndon Park

On Tuesday 17th March Key Stage 1 went on their school trip to Thorndon Park. The weather was fantastic and allowed for an even more enjoyable trip.

All the children were very well behaved and we are very proud of them. The rangers that showed the individual groups around the park shared their opinions on the children.  A member of staff from Thorndon Park said: “The children were a dream come true from a ranger’s point of view.”

Pre-Prep & Reception Fire Station Trip - Wednesday, 29th April

Reception and Pre-Prep visited the Maldon Fire Station.  They were shown around the station by the fire officers and were allowed to get into the fire engines. They were then individually shown how to aim the hose and fire out the water.  Mrs Nicholson had to dress up in all the protective equipment which entertained the children immensely.

Local Studies - Form 5

Report by Theo Wolf in Form 5

On Thursday, Form 5 visited Moot Hall.  Moot Hall comes from the Viking word for ‘meeting place’.  The hall was originally owned by Sir Robert D’Arcy but was sold to the council for £55.  The council changed it into a police headquarters, a prison and a council chamber.

On the ground floor we saw a room with an enormous table in it.  This would have been the main room where the D’Arcy family would have lived.  In the 1960’s they found a hidden doorway.  Behind the doorway they discovered an amazing brick staircase which was left handed, built especially for Sir Robert D’Arcy.

Through another door there was a prison and an exercise yard.  In the yard prisoners had carved their names into the walls.  One man had carved a gun into the wall!  Anyone could be imprisoned in here, from murderers to someone who stole a loaf of bread.  On the first floor, there is a Court Room.  The place where they would sit was called the ‘Well Court’ and this was built in 1810.

 We all enjoyed the visit!
